The Mzima springs water pipeline project is a USD 389 million Public-Private Partnership (PPP) being developed under a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model between the Coast Water Works Development Agency and the Sichuan Roads and Bridges Group. The project entails construction of a 220-kilometer transmission pipeline designed to convey 105,000 cubic meters of potable water per day from Mzima Springs in Taita Taveta County to the Mazeras storage tanks in Kilifi County, supplying the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Taita Taveta. It includes associated pumping stations, reservoirs, and distribution infrastructure to ensure reliable, high-quality water delivery.
The project feasibility study is currently ongoing, with preliminary works and stakeholder engagement in progress. Once operational, the Mzima pipeline will secure long-term water supply for over 3 million residents, support industrial and tourism growth, and strengthen climate resilience across Kenya’s Coast region.
